Why doesn’t Nanolia supply coatings using TiO2?

As a result of a lot of recent publicity about the anti-bacterial properties of TiO2 (Titanium Dioxide), many people have asked us if we can supply coatings that include TiO2. So we asked our Technical Director. Here’s his reply:

“In answer to your question about coatings using TiO2 (Titanium Dioxide)

In fact TiO2 (Titanium Dioxide) works. And when combined with silver it works really well. However, it is still the problem that Ti02 coatings are not long lasting. Our scientists have discussed a few new ideas and raw material information but so far (from the theoretical side) there are as yet no new ideas to avoid this problem.

I understand that some companies might want to get in first by announcing that they have a TiO2 product and from that obtain big leads in order to develop special solutions for the customers. But this is a dangerous strategy that will lead only to disappointment and could even damage the reputation of nanocoatings.

If we supply products that are only 30% good, we will lose our good reputation very fast. On the other hand, if we have 30% solution and can improve it, that would be very good. But then we will come under enormous time pressure. Time pressure is poison for any new developments!

We have some new ideas for long-lasting silver coatings and smooth surfaces. I think this could be the better way. Offering silver-based products that work well against bacteria would be the correct first step, and then take the second step in offering a product combining silver and TiO2.

I will keep you informed of our progress.”

So, watch this space for further news of TiO2 and our new Agios Liquid Technology range.

What is Superhydrophobicity?

Superhydrophobicity is a property of a coating or material that requires the following conditions:

1) A water contact angle greater than 150 degrees

2) For a water droplet

A Droplet of Water

at rest on the coating or material surface, the angle of tilt required for the droplet to go into motion must be low (< a few degrees)

3) The surface of the coating or material must exhibit a low level of contact angle hysteresis* (< a few degrees)

Water Droplets on Nanolia WoodBoost. Note high contact angle.

*Contact angle hysteresis refers to the difference between the advancing and receding water contact angles on the surface. The difference in contact angles while filling and withdrawing fluid from the droplet is measured.

Why is nanocoating technology better than old technology?

Nanolia WoodBoost repels liquids

Question: Having demonstrated the hydrophobic properties of nanocoatings to a number of people, we are often told “that’s very nice but there are many other products (not nano) that already do that and are similarly priced/brand leaders – why should I go the nano route?”

We at Nanolia have our own ideas as to why people should use modern, environmentally friendly nanocoatings but we would be very interested to hear our readers’ views on this important matter.

Advanced properties of Nanolia coatings and impregnations

Apart from being simply Water Repellent due to the hydrophobic “skin” effect, our coatings and impregnations have a “high contact angle” which means that droplets of water roll very easily over the surface, taking contaminants with them. It’s a bit like comparing ball bearings to bean bags with regard to fluidity of movement.

Scrupulously Clean Surfaces
·    At the microscopic level, treated surfaces are so smooth that they are easily cleaned – usually with just water
·    Surfaces are so smooth that dirt and other particles find it difficult to stick – depriving bacteria of food. Hence anti-microbial properties without the inclusion of biocides.

Ultra-thin coating
·    A little goes a very, very long way!
·    Coatings follow the contours of a surface, meaning that they will not make non-slip surfaces slippery.
·    Coatings are extremely flexible, will not crack on flexible surfaces.
·    Breathing characteristic: Allow moisture – water as vapour – to pass through due to tiny gaps between nano-particles.
·    Will not (usually) change the appearance of a surface.  (We have some products such as Nanolia Protect that are designed to enhance surface gloss and deepen colour.)

Environmentally friendly
Non toxic, neither carcinogenic nor mutagenic
Easy to apply with short drying times and no noxious fumes
Long working life and then easily re-applied

If you have more ideas, we’d love to hear them!

Nanolia Powercoat PRO meets Water Industry criteria

Nano-coatings specialist Nanolia has announced the availability of an ultra-thin, transparent coating that provides long-term resistance against chemical attack, weathering and corrosion. Surfaces treated with Nanolia Powercoat PRO™ are able to be cleaned easily without using a special cleanser, have reduced friction and are more resistant to new soiling.

In the water industry, for example, it could be applied to pump casings to make the pump more efficient and prevent fouling. Or to the inside of pipes to improve flow. As it can also be applied to porous surfaces, its has many potential applications in the water industry.

What is Nanolia Powercoat Pro and what does it do?

Nanolia Powercoat Pro is a two-component clear coating based on chemical nanotechnology, offering exceptional gloss retention and weather resistance for many years.

Due to its extremely thin “minimum-coating” thickness, a coating capacity of about 50m² – 80m² per 1kg can be achieved on non-absorbent surfaces such as aluminium, stainless-steel, brass, copper, magnesium and ceramics. It can also be used on glass-fibre and non-porous surfaces such as concrete, plaster, hardwood and mineral based materials. Surfaces already coated with other products can be “refreshed”, sealed and protected on a long-term basis. Dull and tired paintwork, chalky glass-fibre surfaces and cloudy and tired anodised aluminium gleam again “just like new” and in their original colours after treatment.

Approvals

Nanolia Powercoat Pro meets the Australian Water Industry requirements of AS/NZS 4020:2005 for:

* Odour and flavour of water in contact with the material

* Appearance of water in contact with the material

* Mutagenic activity of water in contact with the material

* Growth of aquatic micro-organisms on the material

* Cytotoxicity

* Extraction of metals

It’s also safe for use in food preparation areas, being compliant with German regulations Title 21, Code of Federal Regulations, Chapter 1, part 177.2600 for use in articles intended for repeated contact with food.

Do any Nanolia products use banned substances?

Our scientists keep up to date with the latest discoveries and safety regulations. Our products comply with all the relevant German and/or EU regulations which are some of the strictest in the world. We state that we are confident that our products do not contain ‘NPEs or other APEOs and do not contain any detectable PFOA, PFOS or intermediates with a perfluorinated chain length of more than 6 C atoms.’ (C = Carbon)

Basically, this means that our products are considered safe from a toxicological perspective. They do not contain the long chains that can be broken down into toxic substances, and are acceptable to legislation. The banning of long chain substances is related to their toxicity when degrading and residual absorption in animals. We can find no evidence of molecules with less than 6C’s being implicated in any way in the banning of the products with longer chains.

More about “short chains” – the science behind why shorter is better

For further information on any of our products, please request a copy of the relevant Safety Data Sheet.

Winning the battle against graffiti with the aid of nanotechnology

Graffiti is a huge problem

Graffiti presents major issues throughout the world, creating a very expensive problem for property owners everywhere. Graffiti in the form of drawings, scribbles, pictures, messages or tags painted on ancient monuments, buildings, walls, street furniture, telephone boxes, bus shelters, desks and other surfaces can be seen in many areas within the community. Where visible, graffiti has an enormous negative impact on customers and the public with regards to their perception of an area or building which has been defaced.

Responding to the problem Nanolia (www.nanolia.com) , an innovative company working at the forefront of nano-coating technology, is introducing an advanced range of environmentally friendly products for easier-than-usual graffiti removal. Nanolia’s bio-degradable anti-graffiti products have been proven to work on many different surfaces including, metals, concrete, brick, stone, glass, plastic and wood to offer an alternative in the fight against graffiti. The coatings meet all relevant requirements of the German Quality Association Gütegemeinschaft Anti-Graffiti  e.V.

Nanotechnology provides a clear defence against graffiti

Based on the latest research into nano-coating technology, Nanolia Graffiti Guard for Non-porous Surfaces is an ultra thin (approx 5 – 20μm) two-part clear coating with amazing properties including exceptional gloss retention and long term weather resistance making it ideal for exterior applications such as street signs and outdoor advertising. Surfaces treated with Nanolia Powercoat PRO are highly resistant to soiling and chemical attack,  able to be easily cleaned without the use of special chemicals. In addition, Nanolia Powercoat PRO restores dull and tired paintwork, chalky glass-fibre surfaces and cloudy, tired anodised aluminium to their former glory. Treated surfaces gleam as new and are restored to their original colours while most metal surfaces are given the added benefit of long-term protection against corrosion. The coating is ultra-thin and has a high cover rate of about 50m² – 80m² per 1kg on non-porous surfaces. Only one coat is required.

For application to concrete or stone surfaces Nanolia supplies the amazing single-part water based Nanolia Graffiti Guard for Porous Surfaces which can be applied directly to porous surfaces. Free from organic solvents, once dried it forms an invisible, hydrophobic, oleophobic, breathable and weather stable surface resistant to solvents and acidic and alkaline attacks. Paints and coatings cannot penetrate the surface and thus adhere only weakly. It also reduces the growth of algae, lichens and mosses. A cover rate of 8 – 12mtr² per 1kg can be achieved.

Surfaces treated with either product will still “breathe”.

Removal of graffiti after an attack

Applying AG Removal Gel

Surfaces treated with Nanolia’s anti-graffiti coatings and impregnations are relatively easy to clean.  Defacement by marker pens is resisted by the surface and can be simply “pearled-off”.  More adhesive markings such as cellulose spray paints can be easily removed using Nanolia’s AG REMOVAL LIQUID or AG REMOVAL GEL up to 6-8 times without having to renew the protective layer. Nanolia Graffiti Guard for Non-porous Surfaces can withstand over 25 aggressive cleanings. Simply brush the liquid or gel on, leave to penetrate the graffiti and then rinse off with water.

Nanolia’s standard graffiti removers are easy to use, environmentally friendly and biodegradable.  They are specifically designed for the rapid removal of all types of graffiti from surfaces that have been previously treated with Nanolia Graffiti Guard products. The products are available as a liquid for use on non-porous surfaces or gel for use on both porous and non-porous surfaces. Surfaces previously treated with Nanolia Graffiti Guard for Porous Surfaces will still remain porous –so use the gel, while surfaces treated with Nanolia Graffiti Guard for Non-porous Surfaces will be non-porous – use liquid or gel. For vertical surfaces or materials that require a longer dwell time for the remover to take effect, the Gel would be the better choice.

Nanolia even has a remover for surfaces that have not been previously treated with Nanolia’s Anti-graffiti products. Nanolia AG Removal Gel PRO is especially suitable for the removal of graffiti, emulsion paints and latex colours and enables acrylic plaster, acrylic, alkyd, styrene and NC varnishes to be readily removed with water. It can be used to remove multiple coats of paint, adhesive fabric and foam carpet remnants and has even been used to remove tar from carpet pile without removing the colour – one of the most difficult cleaning tasks imaginable!

Spray paints, felt-tip pen and pen pollution as well as car paints and coatings are removed quickly and easily without leaving any residue.

As with all Nanolia’s Anti-graffiti products, Nanolia AG Removal Gel PRO is environmentally friendly, being biodegradable, free of chlorine, hydrocarbons, strong acids or alkalis.

More information about these products can be found on Nanolia’s website at www.nanolia.com/graffiti
